We are pleased to spotlight Jen Scheuerman, 8th Grade ELA Teacher. Here are a few questions the PTO posed to Mrs. Scheuerman to learn a bit more about her:
Why did you become a teacher? I grew up in a family of educators. My dad taught at Butler for 35 years and my mom was a 3rd grade teacher in Elmhurst. Working with kids was something that I was passionate about at a young age. Teaching also allowed me to follow both of my passions, English and sports, as I can both teach and coach here at CHMS.
What was your favorite subject when you were in middle school? In middle school, I loved both my Language Arts classes and PE.
What was your favorite book you read in middle school (title and author)? I feel like I am really dating myself here. My friends and I loved Francine Pascal’s Sweet Valley High books.
What’s something on your “bucket list”? My husband and I are crazy Disney fans. We talk about getting a chance to visit the Disney Parks located outside of the United States.
How do you like to spend your weekends? My husband coaches college basketball and I love spending time watching his team play. I also enjoy working out and spending time with friends.
If you could go back in time and give your middle school self some advice, what would it be? When I think back to middle school, I think about how much time I spent worrying what other people thought. At the time, it was very easy to let those thoughts drive choices that I made. Looking back on it now, I realize that I gave others too much control over my own choices and happiness. I would want myself to do what makes me happy and to realize that years later, people don’t remember what you did in middle school.
